Breaking Heels Fashion Show - Gwen Fong
Learn about the exciting upwelling of fashion designers emerging from the islands of Fiji as I interview one of the South Pacific's rising stars!

When asked to name the fashion capitals of the world, Suva rarely springs to mind. However, I've discovered that the fashion-forward would do well to keep an eye on the city that's producing exciting new talent with an authentic South Pacific flavour.

I was fortunate enough to interview up and coming designer Gwen Fong about what it's like to be a designer in Fiji and to learn about the series of fashion shows - Breaking Heels.

Q. How did Breaking Heels originally come about and what’s the story behind the name?

"Breaking Heels is a fashion show concept thought up by three friends. Two of which are budding local designers (myself and Rachel Fairfax) and my brother Sam Fong who is in the television production industry and the genius behind it all. We thought of creating a platform for young designers, young entrepreneurs and those young at heart with talent in fashion. A cost efficient way for young fashionistas to showcase and market their products locally. So with the support of Pacific Building Solutions who built our catwalk and Traps Bars for giving us a venue and a few determined individuals, Breaking Heels was born. The name Breaking Heels is the hard work put on the catwalk... hence 'Breaking Heels'."

Q. In 10 words or less, how would you sum up the vibe of Breaking Heels 2?

"Hip, Cool & Chic."

Q. What do you think is a distinguishing factor of Fijian fashion?

"Our culture is based on art and our willingness to incorporate modern trends in our designs."

Q. When did you decide that fashion was something you were passionate about?

"Rachel and I have been both passionate about fashion since we were young."

Q. What is the one of the most personally rewarding pieces or collections that you’ve designed and why?

"Fiji's first Gothic collection which I showcased at the Fiji Fashion Week and won 'emerging designer of the year, 2009'."

Q. Who would you say influences your work?

"Everything and everything and anyone. None in particular."

Q. What advice would you give to young Fijians wanting to start a career in the fashion industry?

"It's a tough business, but the support within our industry is amazing. Don't ever be afraid to try something new."

Q. Have any of the designs featured in Breaking Heels been created with an eye to environmental conservation, for example, organic or cruelty free materials, low-impact dyes, recycled fabrics?

"Yes, in our previous show, I used recycled material for all the head pieces and accessories. This upcoming show is based on retail fashion. But yes, we have plans for environmental conservation in upcoming shows with awareness campaigns included."

Q. In your opinion, what does the future hold for fashion in Fiji?

"I believe that our designs are up there with the rest, it has a great future. As I said earlier, our culture is based on art, this is a new outlet in this modern era, and hopefully, one day, one of our designs will grace the catwalks of Paris & Milan."
